The diabetes industry is a racket. The industries that have grown up to support people who have diabetes are more interested in making money than in helping the people they claim to be helping. These companies include: 1) the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the drugs used by diabetics, 2) the companies that produce the equipment and supplies used to manage diabetes, and 3) the companies that produce specialized foods and nutritional supplements for diabetics. Certainly, many of the items that are produced to assist diabetics control this life-threatening disease are helpful. However, be that as it may, the diabetes industry is a huge enterprise and if an actual cure were to be found for diabetes, it would mean financial disaster for many of these companies. To say that these industries have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo of diabetes as a chronic, long-term illness is an understatement.

First, look at the medications and treatments for diabetes produced by pharmaceutical companies. Patients with Type 1 diabetes (often called Juvenile Diabetes) must take insulin injections on a regular basis. Those patients with Type 2 diabetes typically use various oral medications and sometimes injected insulin. When compared with patients with other chronic illnesses, diabetics are not much different from people with illnesses who must take prescription drugs for their entire lives. The major difference between diabetics (especially Type 1's) and people with other chronic illnesses is that diabetics cannot just take a pill and go about their business. Diabetes requires continual testing, monitoring, and controlling-both of medication and of food intake. A diabetic's primary medication is insulin, and insulin cannot be taken in pill form. It must be injected, which means the purchase of, use of, and disposal of, syringes. In addition, with insulin, diabetics cannot take the same dosage with each administration of the drug, unlike most patients with other chronic diseases who can take the same dosage (a pill) each time. A small bottle of insulin can cost up to $20.

Second, consider the companies that produce the equipment and supplies used by diabetics. A diabetic must first test their blood glucose level in order to determine the amount of insulin they must administer with each dosage, and diabetics may test and give injections 2, 3, 4, or even 5 times a day. In order to conduct these tests, diabetics use a blood glucose monitor, test strips, a device that pricks the finger and draws blood, and a supply of disposable lancets for the finger pricking. It is interesting to note that many companies GIVE diabetics a free blood glucose monitor. This is not because they are so generous; it is because if the patient adopts that company's monitor it will force him/her to use that company's test strips and it is in the test strips where the company's profit lies. A container of test strips can cost anywhere from $30 to $100 for approximately 30 strips. If a diabetic tests three times a day, that is around $3.00 for test strips in just a day.

Some diabetics forego the daily insulin injections for the new insulin pump. The pump is a device which is worn on the body and feeds small amounts of insulin directly into the body, providing better and more consistent control. Unfortunately, it is very expensive, with initial set-up costing anywhere from $5,000 to $6,000, and maintenance costs running close to $500 a month. Unlike the glucose monitor, no pharmaceutical companies are offering to provide diabetics with free insulin pumps, as the monthly maintenance costs would not in any way cover the initial start-up costs as they would with the glucose monitors.

Finally, think about those companies that manufacture specialty foods and nutrition products for diabetics. Diabetes is intimately connected to food because the disease is, in actuality, the inability of the diabetic's pancreas to process food. An entire cottage industry has developed to produce foods and food products that diabetics will be able to eat without increasing their blood glucose levels too much. These companies produce foods low in sugar or with no sugar or with artificial sugar. There are many food companies that produce nothing but products for diabetics.

Why do businesses devote so much effort to diabetes? The National Institute of Health estimated that in 2005 there were almost 21 million diabetics (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) in the United States. The NIH expects this number to double in the coming years. There is no cure for diabetes at this time. All physicians can do for their diabetic patients is to help them learn to monitor and control their disease until a cure is found. Unfortunately, monitoring and controlling diabetes rakes in about $132 billion for the diabetes industry; if a cure were found this profit could disappear over night. And guess who funds most research into finding a cure for diabetes? The very companies that profit from diabetes not being cured.

Make no mistake, the diabetes industry has produced many helpful drugs and devices to make the lives of diabetics easier. But, if a cure for diabetes is found, these companies will no longer benefit the way they are now. The diabetes industry is a racket.
